Welcome to Issue #1 of Sci Phi. The Journal of Science Fiction and Philosophy. So what does an editor write for the first issue of a new magazine ? The best place to start, as they say, is at the beginning.

The idea for this journal was hit upon as an extension of the podcast I have hosted for about 2 years now called. The Sci Phi Show. This podcast has attempted to explore the sorts of philosophical themes that are found in science fiction films and television shows but in general has shied away from exploring philosophical themes in written science fiction. There have been a couple of episodes on short stories that have features on Escape Pod or audio dramas like the Old Time Radio show X-Minus 1 but in general the show concentrated on Film and Television. This journal was born out of a desire to provide a place to explore the ideas found in more literary formats. Also I realized I had a huge potential pool of contributors I could call on and so here is the first issue of what I hope will be a long running Journal.

There are a couple of features I wanted to try out to make the journal more valuable to you the reader. If they work then they will stay, if not I guess they will silently disappear, so any feedback on that would be appreciated. Each short story contains a list of questions for reflection at the end of them. Hopefully these will provide the reader some food for thought and let them explore the ideas in the stories more deeply. On some level I have a vision in my head of groups of fans of the journal getting together over a beer or a coffee and discussing the ideas found in each issue. Time will tell if that proves to be a glimpse into the future or the fevered imaginations of a madman.

So in closing this short opening editorial, I hope you enjoy this inaugural Issue of Sci Phi and I hope you find it an entertaining and stimulating read. Thanks for taking a chance and picking up a copy of Issue #1.
